Human Hair

Hair is the only body part that grows and degenerates throughout life. Under normal circumstances, everyone loses some hair every day, usually between 50 and 150 hairs. The average head has about 125,000 individual shafts of hair. At any time, as much as 85% of the hair on the head is growing for a period lasting from 2 to 6 years. When the growth phase ends, the hair follicle begins the phase of resting for 2 to 6 months and then starts to shed. Eventually a new hair shaft starts to grow, replacing the older on above it as a new growth period begins.

The Most Common Type of Hair Loss

90% of the hair loss seen in men and women is caused by a condition called androgenetic alopecia or common hereditary hair loss. In most men, that is called the pattern of baldness and often progressed to the horseshoe shaped fringe of hair. In women, it demonstrates itself as a general thinning of the hair over the entire hair over the entire head. Hair loss can begin as early as the teens, and by age 35 almost 30% of all people show some amount of hair loss. As long as the follicles remain undamaged, hair loss can be successfully treated.

The Roots of Reversible Hair Loss

Pattern baldness is perhaps the best known form of hair loss. It occurs when the heir follicles overreact to the level of testosterone (the sex hormone) produced by the body. Male pattern baldness is characterized by a gradual thinning of hair on the front and top portions of the scalp. Despite the term, female pattern baldness may not follow a pattern

Many other conditions can lead to temporary hair loss. The most common of these are:

Skin disorders, especially psoriasis and eczema.

Periods of stress, including pregnancy.

Severe illness or diseases such as diabetes, disorders of the thyroid or pituitary glands, and autoimmune diseases (eg., lupus) and malnutrition.

Local trauma induced by eyebrow plucking, use of hair curlers, hot oil treatments and the chemicals used in permanents, or cause by scalp infections.

Cancer treatments; Chemotherapy and radiation damage hair cells, causing loss of hair within days or weeks of starting use of the drug.

Other drugs can have the effect of suspending hair growth. Known examples include anticonvulsants, antithyroid agents, birth control pills, blood thinners, Parkinson's medications, cyclosporine, interferon and excessive amounts of Vitamin A. As long as the follicles remain undamaged, hair loss can be successfully treated.
